The Perfect Summer Day

My favorite season to be in New York City is the summer. There are so many options of things to do, outdoors and in. You can experience parks, beaches, bars, nightlife, shopping, and more! The options are endless. My perfect day in New York City during the summer would start with going to brunch with a few of my friends. We usually head to Calle Ocho, which is a restaurant that has a brunch deal with unlimited sangria and delicious food. We can hang out, eat, and drink. After brunch, we can head to the Museum of Natural History, which is nearby. This is my favorite museum in the world. It is awe-inspiring to see the bones of dinosaurs that are extinct. The planetarium is attached to the museum, so you can see a movie there and explore what the galaxy is like.

After this, my favorite thing to do is head to Brooklyn. I love walking over the Brooklyn Bridge. The views of the city are amazing. The park at the other side of the bridge is pretty and relaxed. Grimaldi s Pizza, a legendary pizza place, is nearby. It has the best thin crust, brick oven pizza I have tasted. Plus, pizza is a great dinner for warm summer nights.

After finishing dinner, we like to go out and explore the nightlife that New York City has to offer. I love to head to Bookmarks Rooftop Lounge in Manhattan. It is a rooftop bar that has a book collection. You can read, drink literary-themed drinks, and have a good view of the city. I love reading, and you never know what books you will encounter here. I have never seen it too crowded, which is nice. The breeze helps feels nice after a hot, humid day. Rooftop bars are easy to find during the summer months, and are lots of fun. Who wants to be stuck indoors when it is nice outside?

I <3 NYC Series: New York, City of Dreams

The VillageNew York City is one of the liveliest places on Earth. There are a million things to do there. One of the most underrated but wonderful neighborhoods in New York is Harlem. In recent years it has undergone a revitalization. There is  a wonderful restaurant called Londel’s om Eighth Avenue in Harlem. It is a small place that my husband has taken me to on several occasions. When we come to Harlem, we leave Londel’s and head out shopping. We usually start on 125th street. Of these occasions, one stands out in particular. We stopped by the Apollo and took pictures. We then made our way up and down the street to all of the stores. We were able to shop and buy clothes and New York memorabilia. We also visited the new Carol’s Daughter store, which had wonderful skin care products. We finished the day by going downtown and then we had a late dinner at a small pizzeria in the village. The day was great because as we drove down Eighth Avenue we got to see all the stores and sites the city has to offer. It was one of the best days of my life! It was a very peaceful, yet completely exciting day in New York.

A Day In The City

Wintertime in New York City provides a sense of holiday spirit that sometimes can be lost or missing amongst the everyday grind of life.  Every year my family and I take a train ride from the shore up to the city.  The first trip while in the city is from Penn Station to Radio City Music Hall;  if it is a nice day we take a leisurely walk amongst the hustle and bustle of the city but if it’s raining we take a cab.  After the annual viewing of the Rockettes and the Christmas Show we are off to see the sights.  Walking down the streets we window shop our way through the city, looking in to see what s new at Saks, Dior, Chanel and all of the other stores I will never really shop at.  Then it is off to FAO Schwartz to see what kind of crazy new toys they have, also to watch the  Big  Piano Show because that never really gets old.  After some more window shopping we head to get some pizza, what we call real pizza, that would beat the New Jersey pizza any day of the week.  Once we’ve had our fill of pizza we walk back down towards Radio City to take pictures in front of the tree.  This annual outing in the city provides us with the holiday spirit we need.

A Thanksgiving to Remember: New York State of Mind

A few years ago, when I was 19 years old, I went to New York City on Thanksgiving day to spend the holiday with my friend Travis, his brother Jack, and their immediate family. While I expected a unique taste of New York City, what with being so far from home and my own family, nothing could have prepared me for what I was about to experience. Upon arrival, I heard news of Travis and Jack’s parents being very strict vegetarians, and that our Thanksgiving meal, while surely delicious, would be less than traditional. In fact, it was so far from the norm, Martha and Frank, their loving parents, had substituted the standard large turkey for a large vegetarian pizza, topped with delicious red and green vegetables. While slightly more difficult to get accustomed to, the meal (which included stuffing, potatoes, and other traditional thanksgiving staples) was outstanding. Wondering why they had settled on pizza, I quickly came to a realization as to where I was. I was in New York City, a place where pizza shops can be found on every street and every corner, and while pizza at the holidays may not exactly be representative of the state as a whole, it certainly gave our meal that unmistakable New York City flair. In all honesty, it was a nice change of pace, and to be quite honest, after a few bites of that delicious homemade Thanksgiving pizza, I really didn’t miss the turkey after all. We ate, we laughed, we shared stories, but most importantly, we were together in New York City on Thanksgiving.

NYC Pizza Moments

New York City has just about any type of food that anyone could ever want.  When I dine out, I am usually attracted to Italian food because New York City has some of the best Italian restaurants outside of Italy.  One of my favorite places to dine out is Front Street Pizza, which is located in Brooklyn.  Yes, there are many more famous Italian restaurants in New York City, but this place is my favorite.  They have great Italian food, including some of the best pizza I’ve ever had in my life, but they also have many other options to choose from.  (They also have a great selection for breakfast!)  It tends to be a bit pricey, but they give you a lot of food for what you pay for.  If you are in Manhattan and you decide to eat out, don’t waste money at an expensive restaurant.  There are many small Italian eateries that are cheap but absolutely delicious!  There’s no need to go to a place like Katz Delicatessen and spend $20 on a hero.  When I’m in SOHO, I like going to Lombardi’s Pizza.  They are a bit pricier than Front St. Pizza, but their pizza cannot be beat (on that side of the bridge)!

5 Seconds of Fame on Good Morning America

In August of 2007, I moved to Connecticut. I made it a habit to take the train to NYC at least two or three times a month. But my favorite memory is when I went to a Good Morning America taping to see Josh Groban.

My friend and I caught a train to NY around 4 a.m. and arrived at Grand Central sometime after five. We ran the blocks to where the show was taping. We were there early, but there was already a HUGE line. We didn’t get into the taping, but we waited outside, bundled up (it was November). Diane Sawyer came out to talk to us. She noticed my sign (ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS IS A HUG FROM JOSH!) and came over to talk with us. I did end up on TV briefly, screaming and waving with the crowd.

A few friends got pulled into the building to dance during a segment and ended up staying, even meeting Groban. They came running out afterward to tell us all about it! Josh Groban came out after the taping to sign.

Afterwords, we went to this amazing pizza place. It was built in an old cathedral, and it was decked out for Christmas. The pizza in NYC is AMAZING! We got jacked on coffee and headed to TKTS. We ended up scoring seats to Rent! They weren’t the best seats, but the theatre is small enough that it didn’t matter. After Rent we were tired. We trudged to Grand Central and caught the train to Milford where my car was parked. We drove home like zombies and slept for 12 hours, then woke up to organize all our pictures from the day. I even sent my mom a youtube video of my 0.5 second appearance on GMA!
