I <3 NYC Series: Big Beauty

Ralph Lauren, by Fanny LittmarckNew York is one of the most popular metros of the world. Name anything and New York has an immense significance in that particular field. Be it fashion, commerce, media, culture, art, Hollywood etc.  Two places I love are Manhattan and Queens. They list among my favorite destinations of New York, but I’d like to stretch more on Manhattan as the experience there has been close to heart. The tall sky scrapers are a beauty to watch. Standing on one of the tallest tower and viewing the entire city makes you feel on top of the world. Moreover you find the wealthiest people residing in this particular area of New York City which makes you feel superior. Manhattan’s neighborhoods are also fun to visit. Neighborhoods such as SoHo are very famous for shopping, and being a diehard shopaholic this place is close to my heart. There are varieties of stuff available here and you simply cannot stop your money flying out of your wallet! There is a particular place famous for its gay population named Chelsea and what I love about this place is the large number of gays in this area as well as I find this place the best to experience night life in New York City. Also, Chinese being one of my favorite cuisines, I love visiting Chinatown, which is heavily flooded with Chinese population and you get to savor world best Chinese food.

New York City Is at its Best in the Fall

Fall comes in quietly to New York City. One day I’m wondering if I’m going to suffocate on the subway due to the insane humidity combined with the body heat of my fellow passengers, and the next night I walk out of subway station and into air that feels unbelievably crisp. The next day, I promise, I’ll remember to bring a sweater. New York City is at its best in the fall. Everyone is buzzing around with a renewed sense of purpose, like everyone is a school kid starting afresh in a new school year. One of my favorite New York fall experiences is the shopping. It doesn’t matter if your budget is H&M or Chanel, fall is the best season to buy clothes. I usually take a couple of Saturdays to hit the best zones in the city. One Saturday I spend in Brooklyn. I go to Williamsburg for funky little boutiques mixed in with some chain stores that I know will have great basics. Greenpoint has amazing little vintage and secondhand stores. This year I’ll be looking for kitten heels and small, ladlylike purses. The next Saturday I’ll start out around 34th street, home to my favorite H&M. Then I’ll head down to SoHo to window shop. The second great thing about New York in the fall is the beginning of a new theater season. During the dog days of summer the Times has kept me updated on the new shows ready to open up. I try to hit a mix of off-Broadway, musicals, and straight plays. As the new plays suck up all the attention I’ll take in last years darlings that I somehow missed. My last favorite fall ritual in the city are the author tours. Fall is a big time in book publishing, and the publishing houses send some authors out on tour. New York is a natural starting place. So the days of heading down to the shore for the weekend are over, but with so much to do in New York in the autumn who can complain?

NYC Pizza Moments

New York City has just about any type of food that anyone could ever want.  When I dine out, I am usually attracted to Italian food because New York City has some of the best Italian restaurants outside of Italy.  One of my favorite places to dine out is Front Street Pizza, which is located in Brooklyn.  Yes, there are many more famous Italian restaurants in New York City, but this place is my favorite.  They have great Italian food, including some of the best pizza I’ve ever had in my life, but they also have many other options to choose from.  (They also have a great selection for breakfast!)  It tends to be a bit pricey, but they give you a lot of food for what you pay for.  If you are in Manhattan and you decide to eat out, don’t waste money at an expensive restaurant.  There are many small Italian eateries that are cheap but absolutely delicious!  There’s no need to go to a place like Katz Delicatessen and spend $20 on a hero.  When I’m in SOHO, I like going to Lombardi’s Pizza.  They are a bit pricier than Front St. Pizza, but their pizza cannot be beat (on that side of the bridge)!

Halloween in The City

I had never truly experienced Halloween until I went to New York City to celebrate last year. One of my good friends from college knew someone who lived in Brooklyn, and he invited us to stay with him for the weekend. My friend had decided to dress up as a pirate and I would go as an embodiment of the sin “Envy”. Now, we had both been to NYC many times before, but never crossed the Brooklyn Bridge, and let me tell you, we were a tad bit scared even before the Halloween celebrations began. Pirate’s friend said in passing as we arrived “Oh, by the way, I hope you weren’t planning on wearing blue here because you might get stabbed”. (Luckily her bandana was a safe shade of red). After settling into the apartment and getting ready, we hopped on the subway and crossed back over to Manhattan. We walked around SoHo, stopped for Falafel in the Village, and ended up going into the somewhat eerie “Evolution Nature Store” to get into the Halloween spirit. There they sell craniums, stuffed animals, and butterflies pinned inside glass cases, etc. We ended our night on Manhattan in Greenwich Village where the annual Halloween Parade is held. Unfortunately that night was particularly cold and rainy, but the parade still went on and every onlooker was dressed for the occasion in various creative costumes. Getting back to Brooklyn afterward was rather tricky as the subway system is far from perfect, so if I go back this year I’ll try to find living arrangements on the “right” side of the bridge.

An NYC Regular

Whenever I go to New York City there are certain things I always have to do when I’m there. With such a great city only a couple of states away, I often find myself catching the ACELA or Mega Bus NYC-bound, and by now I can’t count the number of times I’ve been there on my two hands. With so many different people and a great variety of happening events, there’s always something new to experience. Being of a rather restless nature, I love that about a city. Now, that being said some places are simply too good to only be seen once or twice. My first stop in the spring through fall seasons is Central Park. There is nothing more serene than walking on the winding paths beneath the lush green foliage, or stopping to watch the little kids play with their rented sailboats in the pond. After making my way through the park, I usually find myself entering the Metropolitan Museum of Fine Arts. Not nearly as large as Le Louvre in Paris, but the exhibitions are magnificent and it’s thereby one of my favorite museums. All this walking around and observing gets my appetite worked up which leads to a quick subway trip down to SoHo or The Village where I like to pick out one of their numerous restaurants or cafes. At some point during the day it’s also necessary to do some shopping on 5th Ave and around Times Square. If I feel like indulging, my itinerary also includes visiting Babycakes for one of their exceptional, sweet vegan cupcakes (I’m not 100% sure, but they may have non-vegan treats as well).  Hmm…perhaps it’s time for another visit to NYC?
