NYC New Year’s 1999

This may seem like a million (or thousand) years ago, but remember when the millennium loomed large on the horizon? There was a huge question as to whether the world would actually function the next day. There was the distinct possibility of real chaos breaking out at the stroke of midnight. Would computers freak out and take over the world? Would there be rioting? I knew there was only one place to spend New Year’s 1999 and that was New York City.

My friends and I were not the only revelers braving the city that night. Our gang of six was in good company and the jovial spirit had enveloped everyone. Perhaps New Yorkers had decided that if this was going to be their last night on Earth, they were going to have a good time. The swirling celebration carried us around Central Park, concentrically moving closer to Times Square. If anything was going down, this was the place to see it.

We were in the crush of bodies grooving under Dick Clark’s disco ball waiting for the drop. The true impact of how much of our lives are interconnected with computers was really starting to sink in staring at all of the flashing billboards bombarding my senses at that moment. After a while, we decide to bail on the Square and take it a little further outside of the maze of police barricades.

I think we were all wishing we had made a plan for living off the grid should this whole thing really go up in a ball of flames when we heard the explosion of human elation coming from the distance. Eventually, someone pulled out their phone and the digital face read 12:00. It took a second to realize that the phone was still working! The streetlights were working! People were hugging and kissing not flipping cars or breaking store windows! When the realization had sunk in that, in fact, things were still pretty much the same, we went to the ATM, took out $200 and headed to the nearest bar to celebrate the end of the world happening some other time. Cheers! To NYC! To 2000!

I <3 NYC Series: NYC is cool beans!

My best friend and I visited New York City in July of ‘09. First off I need to say that I was sure that this trip would not be any good but I was wrong. The hotel we stayed at was in pretty good condition and was just a few minutes down from Times Square, which was the only place I wanted to see. We started to walk down there and there were plenty of sidewalk entertainers. They were so awesome to watch. We just sat there and watched them perform. It should have taken us about 5 minutes to walk down to Times Square but it took almost an hour because of all the performances we stopped to watch. We eventually got to Times Square. The first thing we did was go to a restaurant. I thought it was going to be very expensive but we found a pretty affordable one. The food was so good. When we got to Times Square I found myself somewhat mad. It seemed like this place would be so good but after seeing all the sidewalk performers. I still liked Times Square. Lots of people to interact with. We stayed for about a half hour then walked around more to see more performers. Needless to say I wound up loving New York City. I will be going for sure again.

I <3 NYC Series: Greatest City on Earth!

i love new yorkNew York City is by far the best city in the world! Every time I travel I choose to go here. A few things I love to do in New York include going to Times Square, Ground Zero, Central Park and Rockefeller Center. Dining in Times Square is always fun. I really like eating at Mars 2112. I went there the first time for my High School Chorus trip and the second time with my family several years later. It has a great atmosphere and is very unique; almost like you are on a different planet! When I am in the Times Square area I always visit the New Victory Theater. I like to sit up there and watch the traffic and people go by. You can also check out what is on Broadway at the time by just looking around at the advertisements. My friend and I take a lot of silly pictures of ourselves when we are up there. We also like to go to the Swing 46 Jazz and Supper Club to listen to our favorite band, Double Down.  I always make it a priority to visit Ground Zero. It’s so peaceful there and there’s always new development going on. While I’m down there I usually visit Wall Street and stop in at the Starbucks. Another favorite place to get drinks is at Pret A Manger. They have the best hot chocolate! It’s fun to go to Rockefeller Center and grab one at the location they have there. There’s also a great little gift shop called “Pants and  !” that I always make sure to stop into and browse around. Then we usually like to cross the street and check out what’s going on at The Today Show. Sometimes you can get on TV if you are there at the right time! Finally, I always go to Central Park to walk around, take pictures and, of course, watch the ice skaters.

New York, New York

New York City is an amazing place to visit any time of year, however during the winter it is extra special. Once all of the excitement of the holiday season is over, there are still a million things to do. When I first got engaged , I wanted to bring my fiancee there so she could see the city where I grew up. Our first stop was Central Park. Central Park is home to Wollman Rink, an ice skating rink. You can skate for very little and enjoy hot cocoa or coffee . They sell hot pretzels as well. You forget that you are in New York City. After skating for hours, we were tired and needed food. We hailed a cab and decided to have lunch in Times Square. I took her to a place called Virgil’s. Virgil’s is  a great barbecue place that has something for everyone on the menu. It has several specially made sauces and all of them are delicious. After stuffing our faces we decided to take in some culture. My fiancee is a huge history buff so I assumed she would enjoy a trip to The Natural History Museum. I was right. She loved taking pictures near the dinosaurs and at the time there was an exhibit on fashion through the ages. She was elated and it was the perfect way to finish a day in New York. Winter in the city can be very cold . It is best to balance the day with indoor and outdoor activities, this way you are not overwhelmed by the cold. Even choosing to take a tour of the city on a tour bus will provide you with a ton of fun and interesting things to do.

New Year’s is Nuts!

There is no place on Earth like Times Square on New Year’s Eve. It is an amazing mix of people. Many believe that it is overwhelming and it can be. My wife and I go every year and have figured out a safe and fun way to enjoy the night. We start by having an early dinner at a local restaurant like the Bubba Gump restaurant. It is a great atmosphere and the restaurant joins in the fun. They handed out noise makers and eyeglasses. The eyeglasses said 2010. The servers are all excited, as are the patrons. We usually head out into Times Square a little before the ball drops. It can be hard to even get out the doors. There is nothing quite like the sound of hundreds of thousands of people counting down. The sound is huge and it is almost frightening. But the fear quickly changes to exhilaration. There are people hugging people they don’t even know. Everyone sings the first few lines of Auld Lang Syne, this is mainly because people only know the first few lines. We usually end the evening by walking back to our hotel , because there are no taxis that can get into the area.

New Years Eve at Times Square

When I was going to high school in New York, my roommate Eric and I would always go to Times Square for New Years Eve to see the ball drop. We lived on the Upper West Side by Columbia and would hit a movie or go music shopping that evening on the Upper West Side. We’d start walking down to Times Square from 59th Street or so, just depending on where we wound up that day. Even early in the evening – starting around 9 or so – it would start getting more crowded than normal around 49th Street or so. Security guards would be blocking the front of the movie theatres in Times Square. We’d see all the store owners and theatre owners putting up plywood so their windows wouldn’t get broken out. Traffic was stopped and rerouted so Times Square became one big pedestrian mall – ironically – now it is! By 11, we couldn’t move – we would be down around 45th Street then, with a great view of the ball drop at the Times Building on 42 St. When the countdown began, with the scoreboard providing a cue, everyone would shout out the countdown. It was deafening, to say the least. After the ball-drop, I’d say at least 3 people would try to sing Auld Lang Syne – everyone else was too busy hugging their friends, blowing on their noisemaker, or kissing their girlfriend. By 12:30 or 1 am, it starting clearing a little – but it was still VERY unnerving to get swept up in the crowd rushing towards the subway stop. Sometimes our feet wouldn’t touch the ground for 5 or 6 feet. I can’t believe we didn’t get separated. I’m not quite sure why we needed to be there, but I know we knew that we HAD to be there – that it was THE New York thing to do. Living out here in Ohio now, watching the ball-drop with my son – it’s a lot of fun to point out to him, “See that corner – I celebrated 4 New Years’ Eves right there! That was me!”. He is not very impressed.

Times Square – The Heart and Soul of New York City

I truly believe that the mention of New York City would be incomplete without mentioning Times Square. This is my favorite place to hang out in New York. When I first visited Times Square with a bunch of friends from college, I fell in love with it. I find that the people here are friendly, polite and really helpful. There are Broadway shows, movie theaters, art galleries, museums, shopping malls, hotels, restaurants, clubs, bars and loads of other places to visit. Times Square is in the heart of New York City and gives New York a vibrant, bustling, energetic feel. I have visited this place several times now. Times Square comes alive at night, with neon lights, billboards and huge signs everywhere you go. We all know what they say about New York, and Times Square is definitely a place that never sleeps. I particularly enjoy visiting this restaurant in Time square, called the Bubba Gump. The restaurant is based on the  movie “Forest Gump”. This is one of the best chain restaurants in New York. I love this place, and the staff is really friendly. They serve the most amazing shrimp and other seafood. Every time I visit New York, I visit the Times Square and stop by at Bubba Gump.

The City of Bright Lights

My favorite place to hang out in New York City is Times Square. I go there all the time because there is always something new to see. There is so much energy and excitement; it just gives me the “feel of New York City”. I love the lights and the noise and all the people. Everything is open all night and you can hardly tell it’s dark out! It’s like the city’s playground. Even the subway sign is lit up. Everything there is so much fun, even the regular stuff. The billboards are huge and the lights are bright. There is an infinite number of things to look at and it seems like it’s always changing. For this reason, I love bringing people to Times Square that have never been to New York. I also think it’s a great place for people watching; there are so many different types of people there from all walks of life. People who speak different languages, rich, poor, homeless people, all races. It’s such a  rich and interesting mix. I especially love watching the tourists take pictures of everything. I think Times Square is the quintessential New York City that people think of when they are visiting. It has the bright lights, the excitement and the noise that you expect out of the greatest city in the world.

Make the Big Apple Your Cool Apple

This summer has definitely been one for the record books in New York City. Saying we are a “melting pot” has taken on a whole new meaning! On the days when the heat is just awful to deal with, I go to the movies. As a Jamaica, Queens resident I take advantage of $6 Tuesdays at the Jamaica Multiplex. I get to see a movie, save some cash, and stay cool all at the same time. But what about the other days of the week? Well, any day is a great day to pay a visit to your local library. I have a toddler nephew who is fascinated with books about animals, so I go to the library and pick up a few books to keep him entertained. Again, free air conditioning!
The best place to be during one of NYC’s heat waves is Manhattan, specifically Times Square. In that short cluster of city streets you can see wax celebrities at Madame Tussaud’s, extremely weird artifacts in Ripley’s Believe it Or Not, or stock up on Yankees gear at the club house. The wax museum grants you at least 2.5 hours in their well air conditioned facility. It can be a little pricey for a visit, but its the closest you’ll probably get to the celebrities you’ll “meet” inside. Fire up that Metrocard and just travel the subway! (All trains have air conditioning so take advantage of it!)

Spring Break in NYC

My favorite moment in New York City was Spring Break of 2003.  Some people thought it was a strange place to go for Spring Break but me and my two friends had a blast!  We stayed with some friends, which saved us a bundle on hotel accommodations.  It was also very cool to have live-in tour guides!  My favorite moment of the trip was experiencing Times Square.  I had see it so often on television and I was just ecstatic to be able to experience it in person.  My two friends and I hopped around to different restaurants and bars in Times Square and made all kinds of new friends!  It was really the best Spring Break ever.  We got to experience a whole new culture and that was absolutely the best part of the trip for me.

Also, during our trip we went to see Ground Zero.  This was a very emotional moment for us, but it was so important to experience such a large part of our recent history.  I am proud to say that I paid my respects to all of the fallen American citizens at Ground Zero.  I would recommend anyone to go and experience New York City on vacation because it is so full of culture.  I felt more complete as an American citizen when I returned home from New York City!
