Don't Forget To Interview the Interviewer!

Written By Jimmy Sweeney, President of CareerJimmy and Author of the new, Job Interview "Secret".

Many job seekers worry and fret about the questions a hiring manager may ask them during a job interview. They want to prepare for them ahead of time so they'll have their answers ready when the time comes. Understandable, of course. But in the process they often overlook planning the questions they should ask of the person conducting the interview.

Yes, that's right! You can ask questions, as well, and it's important that you do so. When YOU ask some intelligent questions during the job interview, you position yourself as confident go-getter. You show that you are interested and interesting. There is a positive intangible benefit to "interviewing the interviewer" that can really boost your chances of getting hired.

Examples You Can Use

The following list of questions might spark some of your own. Jot them down so you won't neglect or forget to pose them when you're seated in the interviewer's office or on the phone.

  • What are some of the growth opportunities a new employee can anticipate?
  • Does this company foster and support individual creativity to effect bottom line results? That might be saving the company money or adding additional revenue and customers for example.
  • Do some employees participate in decision-making and offer their ideas for solutions to certain problems in their area of expertise?
  • What are the benefits and vacation packages associated with this position?
  • I'm really impressed with what I hear so far as well as from my previous research on this company. How do you like working here?

Rise Above the Competition

It's no secret we're living and working in some of the toughest economic times we've seen in decades. You need every advantage you can get when it comes to your job search. As you can see, by interviewing the interviewer, you are being pro-active, positive and engaging. These are qualities the majority of job seekers simply don't display. So go ahead and make a list of thought provoking questions you can ask during your next job interview and watch what happens. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised with the response.
