Christmas Windows/Bergdorf Goodman

Bergdorf’s has created a Cavalcade of Creatures for it’s respendant holiday windows this season. Always the talk of the uptown crowd, the windows rival themselves each year in blatant superlatives.

The phantasmagorical haute of fashion is herein envisioned with a panoply of gorgeous gowns, surrounded by creatures who seem to be from The Island of Dr. Moreau. Fishscale covered sleek bias dresses, whooshing skirts awash in beading and feathers, sequinned patterns mimicking precision embroidery all give a splash of intense inspiration.

Each window decries the last, as golden headpieces fan out above gilded objets, or turquoise fish , impeccably tiled, float around a pseudo mermaid, complete with an Esther Williams swimcap . Vintage headgear is used to spark the imagination in windows where ancient photographic gear lends an eye to the eye of fashion. Cool tones in one window, brilliant Oscar de la Renta magnificat in the next. Animals of every configuration: plumed, carved wood, paper, all surround the mannequins. They rise in gallant glory, before the riches of the world and of the imagination.

Put Bergdorf’s on your list of “must-sees” this week, and dare step into another world. And I’m sure they accept credit cards, should you want to take any of the magic home!
